BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Babson College men's tennis team picked up a much-needed win in impressive fashion on Saturday, as the Beavers opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play with a convincing 9-0 sweep of visiting Springfield College at the sun-splashed Farwell Courts.
Snapping a four-match slide, the Beavers improved to 5-5 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Springfield fell to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.
Babson's three doubles tandems started the day off strong, beginning when senior captain Mitchell Henry (Wellesley, Mass.) and first-year Saif Rahim (Hong Kong) coasted to an 8-1 victory at number three. First-years Roberto Perez (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) and Victor Vu (Los Angeles, Calif.) quickly followed with an 8-2 win at two, and sophomores Connor DeFiore (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and Ramone Doyley (Kingston, Jamaica) completed the sweep with an 8-5 triumph at one.
The Beavers quickly put the overall match away in singles competition, as DeFiore swept his match at five, 6-0, 6-0, and first-year Davin Garcia (Essex Junction, Vt.) added the clincher at six moments later, 6-0, 6-2.
Vu, first-year Isaac Thylen (Surfside, Fla.), and Doyley also tacked on straight-set wins for Babson, while Perez claimed victory in the day's only three-setter, topping Springfield's Kyle Mersereau (Brunswick, Maine), 6-7 (5), 6-3, (10-1), at number one.
