BABSON PARK, Mass. – Sophomore Connor DeFiore (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) claimed a three-set, tie-break victory over his opponent at number five singles to help the Babson College men's tennis team defeat visiting Connecticut College, 5-4, in a non-conference contest on Friday.
After Babson (6-6) took two out of three doubles matches, Connecticut College (1-6) rallied to tie the overall score by taking three of the first five completed singles matches. The Camels notched wins at the number one, two, and six spots, while the Beavers received wins from sophomore Ramone Doyley (Kingston, Jamaica) at number three and senior Mitchell Henry (Wellesley, Mass.) at number four.
With the overall match knotted at 4-4, DeFiore held a slim 4-3 lead in the third set of his match with the Camels' Huan Nguyen at number five when play was halted due to darkness. The two teams then reconvened in Babson's PepsiCo Pavilion, where DeFiore eventually outlasted Nguyen in a third-set tie-breaker, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (1) to clinch the overall win.
Babson returns to action tomorrow afternoon with a road NEWMAC match at Coast Guard beginning at 1 p.m.
