MEDFORD, Mass.—Sophomores Roberto Perez (Pozuelo de Alarcon, Spain) and Victor Vu (Los Angeles, Calif.) claimed a victory at number one singles, but it wasn't enough as 27th-ranked Tufts University claimed an 8-1 victory over Babson College in non-conference men's tennis action at the Hirsh Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.
With the loss, Babson drops to 0-1 on the season while Tufts is now 1-0.
Perez and Vu earned the Beavers lone point of the day with an 8-6 win over the duo of sophomore Rob Jacobson (Winnetka, Ill.) and first-year Brad Wong (Granite Bay, Calif.) at number one doubles. The Jumbos earned a pair of easy victories in the final two doubles matches and then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Sophomore Davin Garcia (Essex Junction, Vt.) claimed the first set over first-year Ryan Rosen (La Jolla, Calif.), 7-6, at number five singles, before falling 6-2 in the second set and 10-3 in the superbreaker.
The Beavers return to action on Saturday when they head to New London, Conn., for a flighted tournament with Connecticut College and Coast Guard, while Tufts is off until next Friday when they compete in the ITA New England Championships at Middlebury College.
