Men's Tennis Splits Matches at Gordon Invitational

WENHAM, Mass.—The Babson College men's tennis team kicked off the 2016-17 season with a pair of matches at the Gordon Invitational Tournament on Saturday. The Beavers defeated Colby-Sawyer College, 9-0, to open the day before falling to Division II Southern New Hampshire University, 7-2.

The Green and White got off to a fast start against the Chargers, picking up three key points in doubles. Junior Ben Roque (Coral Gables, Fla.) and first-year Dan Levitan (Winter Park, Fla.) were 8-6 winners at number one, sophomore Brandon Rosenbluth (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and first-year Alberto De Mendiola (San Jose, Costa Rica) picked up an easy 8-0 victory at number two, and junior Connor Chin (Lexington, Mass.) and first-year Dylan Pace (Atherton, Calif.) cruised to an 8-1 decision at number three.

De Mendiola and Rosenbluth both prevailed in third-set superbreakers at first and second singles, respectively, while each of the four other singles matches were decided in straight sets. Levitan won 6-3, 6-4 at number three, Roque breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at number four and Chin was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at number five. Pace finished off the sweep with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at number six.

Despite a pair of tight matches, the Beavers were unable to steal a point in doubles against the Penmen. Roque and Levitan had the best opportunity to get the Green and White on the board, but suffered a 9-7 loss at number two.

Levitan bounced back to pick up a 6-3, 6-3 victory at number three singles, while De Mendiola dropped the first set before rallying for a 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) triumph at number one. Southern New Hampshire wrapped up the final four singles matches in straight sets to close out the match.

Babson will return to action on Sunday when it travels to Colby at 12 p.m.
