Men's Tennis Drops NEWMAC Opener at No. 21 MIT, 7-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—In a rematch of last season's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament championship match, 21st-ranked MIT won five of six singles matches in straight sets and defeated visiting Babson College, 7-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the JB Carr Tennis Bubble.

Babson, which has dropped two straight matches, is now 5-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play, while MIT improves to 8-1 overall and 1-0 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Dylan Levy (Miami, Fla.) and first-year Dan Levitan (Winter Park, Fla.) suffered an 8-0 loss at third doubles, and junior Ben Roque (Coral Gables, Fla.) and sophomore Ho Wang Alastair Ng (Hong Kong) dropped an 8-4 decision at number two as the Engineers built a quick 2-0 lead. The Beavers got on the board as sophomore Brandon Rosenbluth (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) and first-year Alberto De Mendiola (San Jose, Costa Rica) earned an 8-4 win at number one doubles.

The Green and White struggled to find its footing in singles as De Mendiola was the only player to take a set. He held a 6-3, 3-5 lead at number one when MIT sophomore Tyler Barr (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) retired.

Babson returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Vassar at 10 a.m. and Clark at 3 p.m., while MIT takes on Vassar on Friday at 4 p.m.

•    The Beavers are 20-4 against NEWMAC foes going back to the start of the 2013 season with all four losses coming to MIT.
•    De Mendiola and Rosenbluth have now won four straight matches at number one doubles going back to March 20.
