Men's Tennis Tops Coast Guard, 5-1, in NEWMAC Semifinals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—First-year Alberto De Mendiola (San Jose, Costa Rica) and junior Ben Roque (Coral Gables, Fla.) were both victorious in singles and doubles as second-seeded Babson College defeated third-seeded Coast Guard Academy, 5-1, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal on Saturday at the Carr Tennis Bubble.

With its fifth straight win, Babson (11-8) moves onto the conference title match for the fifth year in a row. Coast Guard sees its season come to a close at 7-9.

De Mendiola and sophomore Brandon Rosenbluth (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) got the Beavers on the board with an 8-6 win at number one doubles, while Roque and sophomore Ho Wang Alastair Ng (Hong Kong) followed with an 8-3 triumph at number two. Babson's pair of first-years Dylan Pace (Atherton, Calif.) and Dan Levitan (Winter Park, Fla.) suffered an 8-6 loss at number three.

De Mendiola won a first-set tiebreaker and then cruised to a 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 win at number one singles. Roque breezed to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at number four, while Levitan was a 7-5, 6-4 winner at number three.

Rosenbluth led 6-7 (7-4), 6-1, 3-2 in the third when his match was halted, and Ng was a point away from winning the first set at number five singles.

Babson returns to action on Sunday when it takes on top-seeded MIT at 1 p.m. in Cambridge.

•    The Beavers are 4-2 all-time against Coast Guard in NEWMAC Tournament play, which includes semifinal victories in each of the last two seasons.
•    De Mendiola and Rosenbluth, who are ranked eighth in the ITA regional rankings, have now won 11 straight matches at number one doubles.
•    Babson is 9-5 all-time in NEWMAC Tournament semifinal matches and have won five straight going back to 2013.
