Track & Field at the NCAA New England Division III Championships

The Babson College men's and women's track & field teams will send 11 athletes to take part in the NCAA New England Division III Championships starting on Thursday afternoon at MIT. The competition will open with the decathlon, which begins on Thursday afternoon and will finish up on Friday evening, and will be followed by the majority of the events on Saturday.
2014 NCAA NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP:
The Beavers put together a historic performance at least season's NCAA regional as junior Dominic Esposito and Imani Smith '14 both set school records, while senior Marina Capalbo became the second in program history to earn All-New England honors in multiple events in the same season. Esposito totaled a then-school-record 5,643 points in the decathlon, and Smith came in fifth in the 400-meter hurdles to earn All-New England accolades for the second time in her career. Capalbo finished sixth in both the 800 and 1500 meters.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS:
The Green and White is coming off a strong performance at the conference championship meet last Saturday, led by Capalbo and first-year John Decker. Capalbo became the first in program history to earn NEWMAC Track Athlete of the Year honors after winning the 800-meter run and coming in second in the 1500 meters, while Decker became the first male to win an individual conference title in over a decade with his victory in the 800 meters. Senior Mark Gulesian earned All-NEWMAC recognition for the second time in three years with his second-place finish in the 1500-meter run, and teamed with Decker, Esposito and sophomore JD Greenfield to set a new school record with a time of 3:25.84 in the 4x400 meter relay.
Esposito enters the decathlon with the second-best score among the event's 14 participants…his total of 6,133 points recorded at the Holy Cross Decathlon back in mid-April is also the 14th highest total in Division III this season…Capalbo, who has qualified for the NCAA national championships in each of the last two years, enters the weekend with the 16th-best time (4:35.07) in the 800-meter run this spring.
