BABSON PARK, Mass.—In the midst of one of its best seasons in school history, the Babson College men's and women's track & field program achieved another first on Sunday morning as senior Marina Capalbo (Gainesville, Va.) and junior Dominic Esposito (Massapequa, N.Y.) were both selected to compete at the 2015 NCAA Division III National Championships.
Esposito becomes the first male in program history to be selected, while Capalbo was tabbed for the third consecutive year. The Beavers will also send two participants to the national meet, which is being held at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., starting on Thursday, for the first time.
Capalbo, who has set or broken three school records this season, will make her third straight appearance in the 1500-meter run at the NCAA national championships. She won New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Athlete of the Year honors after winning the 800-meter run and finishing second in the 1500 meters, and then broke her own program marks in both events to earn all-region accolades at the NCAA New England Championship on May 2. Capalbo enters nationals with the 11th-best time among the 22 qualifiers.
Esposito will make his NCAA national championship debut on Thursday after breaking his own program record with 6,159 points in the decathlon this spring. A three-time NCAA New England Championship and ECAC Championship qualifier, he garnered all-region honors and All-ECAC accolades after coming in third and fourth, respectively, at this year's events. Esposito is one of just two New England competitors to qualify for nationals in the decathlon.
Esposito will get the decathlon underway at 12 p.m. on Thursday, while Capalbo will compete in the 1500-meter run prelims that afternoon at 3:45 p.m. at the Merrick-Pinkard Track & Field Complex.
