Decker Defends Title in 800 Meters, Becomes Babson's First Three-Time NEWMAC Champion
BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson College senior John Decker (Parkland, Fla.) came from behind to defend his title in the 800-meter run and collected a pair of all-league honors at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships on April 28 at Springfield College.
Decker posted a time of 1:54.52 to finish just over a half-second ahead of Coast Guard's Brett Foster to become just the second athlete in program history to come in first in the same event in back-to-back seasons. His time was the fastest of his career in the 800 meters at the league meet, and made him the first three-time conference champion in Babson history. Additionally, Decker came in second in the 1500-meter run to add to his program record of six NEWMAC all-conference awards.
The most decorated athlete in school history, Decker earned All-America honors in the 800 meters after becoming the Beavers' first qualifier for the Division III National Championships in 2017. He came in second at Princeton's Sam Howell Invitational with a season-best time of 1:51.27 on April 6, which helped him qualify for nationals for the second year in a row.
