Women's Basketball Wins Stevens Tip Off Tournament with 66-56 Victory Over Host Ducks

HOBOKEN, N.J. - The Babson College women's basketball team went on a 17-0 run to start the second half on their way to a 66-56 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology to win the 2009 Stevens Tip-Off Tournament. Sophomore Kathleen King (Framingham, Mass.) and junior tri-captain Becky Bowman (Melrose, Mass.) were both named to the All-Tournament Team and King was also named Tournament MVP. In the win, King led the Beavers with 17 points and 12 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. With the win, Babson improves to 2-1 on the season and the Ducks of Stevens are now 3-1.

In addition to King's 17 points and 12 rebounds, she also chipped in 3 assists and one blocked shot. Following close behind was Bowman who added 14 points in the victory. First-year Sarah Collins (Weymouth, Mass.) came off the bench to score a career high 13 points and also added six rebounds. Sophomore Nicki Wurdeman (Rowley, Mass.) finished with eight points and nine rebounds while sophomore Michelle Kenel (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) scored a season high nine points off the bench.

Babson got on the board first to start the game but then the Ducks took charge and did not allow the Beavers to take the lead for the rest of the half. The game was tied, 6-6, at the 15:36 mark but then the host Ducks went on an 8-0 run to go up 14-6 with 12:27 remaining in the half.  Stevens went up by as many as 14 points and eventually entered halftime with a 12 point lead, 34-22.

The Beavers scored 17 unanswered points to start the second half, including three three-point baskets, taking the 39-34 lead with 11:57 left in the game. The Babson defense held the Ducks scoreless for over eight minutes in this scoring run. Stevens did not take the lead again until the7:41 mark when Dawn Garcia sank a three-point basket to give the Ducks the lead, 46-44.  The ducks went up by five with six and a half minutes to go but the Beavers fought back once again going on a 7-0 run. From this point on, the Beavers kept the lead which eventually resulted in the ten point victory, 66-56.

The Beavers return to action November 30th when they travel to Worcester State College for a 7pm game.
