Women's Basketball Officially Clinches Top Seed In NEWMAC Tournament

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- With its 59-49 victory over WPI and a loss by Wheaton this past Saturday, the Babson College women's basketball team officially clinched the top seed in the upcoming NEWMAC Tournament. The Beavers, the first team in conference history to start out 14-0 in league play, are winners of 10 straight and are 18-3 overall.
With four games remaining in the regular season, Babson now has a four-game lead over both Wheaton and Springfield, who sit in a tie for second place with conference records of 10-4. The Beavers hold the tie-breaker over the Lyons and the Pride thanks to regular-season sweeps of both teams, meaning Babson cannot be overtaken in the NEWMAC standings.
The Beavers will be seeking their second straight conference title this winter. As the second seed a year ago, Babson defeated #7 Coast Guard, #3 Springfield, and #4 Wheaton to claim the program's fourth league championship and NCAA Tournament berth.
The 2010 NEWMAC Tournament will begin with the quarterfinal round on Wednesday, February 24, when Babson will host the eighth-seeded team at 7 p.m. Should they win, the Beavers would then host the semifinals and finals on Saturday, February 27 and Sunday, February 28.
Babson closes out the regular season with three of its four remaining games at home, starting with a 7 p.m. tilt with Wellesley this Wednesday.
