Pickering Named NEWBA Player of the Year

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Babson College senior Giovanna Pickering (Hull, Mass.) picked up her second major honor in as many days as she was selected as the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Player of the Year on Tuesday afternoon.

Pickering, who also earned New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year and D3hoops.com All-Northeast Region first-team honors, is the Beavers' first NEWBA Player of the Year since Sarah Collins '13 in 2013. She averaged career highs of 18.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.4 steals while shooting 44.3 percent in 29 games this season.

One of the top players in program history, Pickering dished out a school-record 376 assists, ranks fourth all-time with 245 steals and is sixth on Babson's all-time scoring list with 1,538 points. She scored 20 or more points 12 times this winter, tied for third in single-season history with 115 assists and ranks fourth on the program's single-season scoring list with 535 points.

A three-time All-NEWMAC first-team selection, Pickering also earned conference rookie of the year honors in 2014 and is just the fifth player in school history to collect all-region accolades.

Babson, which captured its seventh NEWMAC Tournament championship in nine years to earn an NCAA Tournament berth, went 24-6 and reached the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2011.
