Pickering, Russell Named to NEWBA All-Star Classic Squad

SPRINGFIELD, Mass.—Babson College seniors Giovanna Pickering (Hull, Mass.) and Taylor Russell (Braintree, Mass.) have been selected to participate in the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) 2017 Senior All-Star Classic. The game will be held on Saturday inside the Mildred S. Howard Gymnasium on the campus of Mount Holyoke College at 2 p.m.

Pickering, who was selected as the NEWBA and New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year, also garnered D3hoops.com fourth-team All-America honors last Saturday. She led the team with career highs in scoring (18.4 points), assists (4.0) and steals (2.4) while also pulling down 5.8 rebounds and shooting 44.3 percent from the floor.

The program's all-time leader with 376 assists, Pickering also finished her career ranked fourth in program history in steals (245) and seventh in points (1,538).

Russell was named to the all-conference second team after starting all 30 games and averaging career highs of 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds. She shot 40.5 percent from the floor and led the Beavers with 32 three-point field goals, while reaching double figures in scoring on 22 occasions.

Russell, who started 43 of 94 games, scored 806 career points and pulled down 444 rebounds. She also ranks 12th in program history with 53 three-point field goals.

Babson (24-6), which reached the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the first time since 2011, finished 23rd in the final WBCA national poll and 24th in the D3hoops.com poll.
