Field Hockey Breaks Program Shutout Mark for Second Consecutive Season while Clinching NEWMAC Regular Season Title

BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year goalkeeper Deirdre Barry (Longmeadow, Mass.) made a pair of first-half saves and the Babson College field hockey posted its school-record 11th shutout of the season while clinching its second consecutive New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) title with a 3-0 victory over MIT on October 29 at MacDowell Field.

Sophomore Catherine Gilman (Cohasset, Mass.) and junior Elise Towers (Cicero, N.Y.) scored just 34 seconds apart late in the opening period and senior Staci Swallow (South Portland, Mass.) tacked on a second-half goal for the Beavers, who went unbeaten in conference play for the fourth time since 2007. The Green and White were dominant against league foes, posting seven shutouts and allowing just one goal and nine shots on goal in eight contests.

Babson, which set a new school record with 10 clean sheets on its way to winning 17 games in 2015, capped a historic year with a Division III-high 15 shutouts en route to the Division III Final Four. The Beavers blanked five consecutive opponents on two different occasions, and conceded just five goal in a 17-game stretch between September 16 and November 13.

The Green and White finished the year at 21-3 overall and ranked second nationally in shutouts per game (0.63) and third in goals against average (0.70). Barry, who matched the program record with her eighth clean sheet of the year in the MIT win, would go on to set new single-season program marks for both wins (20) and shutouts (12).
