Beavers Win Tiebreaker, Grab Top Seed for Next Week's NEWMAC Tournament
BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Lyndsay Giroux (Westwood, Mass.) and junior Lexi Lenaghan (Hanover, Mass.) combined for eight goals and five assists as Babson College defeated visiting Mount Holyoke College, 19-5, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field.
Babson, which clinched a share of its second NEWMAC regular season title in three years, closes the regular season at 10-7 overall and 7-1 in league play. The Beavers finished tied atop the standings with Springfield and MIT, and earned the top seed in next week's conference championship. Mount Holyoke closes the year at 3-13 overall and 1-7 in the NEWMAC.
Lenaghan had four goals and three assists, all in the first half, while Giroux scored four times and dished out a pair of assists for the Beavers. Senior Julia Harrigan (Portsmouth, R.I.) and first-year Sara O'Connor (Marshfield, Mass.) each scored twice as 11 different players finished with at least one tally in the win. Junior Deyscha Smith (Boston, Mass.) had two goals and one assist to lead the Lyons. Senior Kaitlin Braz (Tolland, Conn.) also scored once and contributed three ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers.
The Green and White built a 6-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest as Harrigan buried a pair of free-position chances, while Giroux scored twice and then set up tallies by Lenaghan and Buonagurio. Lenaghan scored back-to-back goals to make it 8-0 at the 19:40 mark and O'Connor notched the first of her two markers to push the lead to 9-0 before Smith got Mount Holyoke on the board with 16:50 to go in the stanza.
Lenaghan's fourth tally made it 10-1 just over a minute later, and Giroux and O'Connor both scored over the final seven minutes of the half to extend Babson's lead to 14-2 at the break.
First-year Georgia Salvatore (Westwood, Mass.) recorded a goal and an assist early in the second half, while free-position shots by sophomores Olivia Remley (Ridgewood, N.J.) and Catherine Collins (Barrington, R.I.) gave the Beavers their biggest lead of the game at 18-3 with 6:04 to go in the contest.
Sophomore Cricket Fligor (Weston, Mass.) and sophomore Olivia Phelan (Wilton, Conn.) combined to make one save for Babson, while sophomore Mia Wysocki (Longmeadow, Mass.) stopped eight shots for the Lyons.
