Baer Named Rookie of the Year, while Sweeney Collects All-MacConnell Division Accolades for a Program Record Third Time
BABSON PARK, Mass.—After helping the program record its top league finish in over two decades, the Babson College women's alpine ski team had three racers named to the All-MacConnell Division team this week.
Senior Kristen Sweeney (Westport, Conn.) collected her third all-conference honor, junior Tatum Alkier (Collingwood, Ontario) was named to the team for the second time and first-year Elizabeth Baer (Salt Lake City, Utah) earned her first all-league nod and also was selected as the MacConnell Division Rookie of the Year.
Baer, who was the Beavers' top finisher in seven races, came in fifth in the MacConnell Division standings after recording eight top-10 results in nine starts this winter. She posted three top-five showings in the giant slalom, earned a pair of podium finishes in the slalom and placed no lower than eighth in any of the eight races she completed during the regular season.
Sweeney, who was also named to the All-MacConnell Division team in 2014 and 2016, completed all 10 races this season and finished 14th in the league standings. She recorded seven top-15 results, which included a pair of top-10 showings in the giant slalom, on her way to becoming the program's first three-time all-conference honoree.
Alkier, who finished fourth in the MacConnell Division standings as a rookie in 2015, garnered all-league accolades for the second time in three years after finishing eighth in the individual standings. She came in no lower than 13th in any race and recorded seven consecutive top-10 finishes to end the regular season.
Babson will compete in the United States Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) Eastern Regional Championships for the third straight year this weekend at West Mountain.
