BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Babson College women’s soccer team collected its first New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win of the season on Saturday, as the Beavers shut out visiting Smith College, 2-0, as part of Back To Babson Weekend 2010. With the victory, Babson improved to 6-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the conference, while the Pioneers fell to 1-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the NEWMAC.
Babson scored the game’s first goal in the 38th minute, as sophomore Ashley Tourso (Glen Rock, N.J.) made a move past a defender at the top of the box and lofted a shot over junior keeper Lindsey Gregor (Bradenton, Fla.) and under the crossbar at 37:31. It was Tourso’s team-leading third goal of the season.
The Beavers added to their lead midway through the second half,
as a Smith foul in the box gave the hosts a penalty kick. Sophomore
Amy Festa (Medfield, Mass.) then placed the
ensuing PK into the lower right corner for her third goal of the
season, making it 2-0 Babson at 68:48.
That would be more than enough for junior goalie Lisa Wojnar (Bellaire, Texas), who finished with two saves in net as she earned her sixth shutout in seven starts this season. Gregor turned in a strong effort in defeat for the Pioneers, finishing with 13 saves.
