My name is Carson Drake and I am a sophomore from Lawrence, Kan., on the Babson women's soccer team. This summer I was an intern in Washington D.C. for Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins, the representative for Kansas's 2nd Congressional District.
I wanted to do this internship because I have always been interested in politics and it was a good way to get a feel for the day-to-day operations of the U.S. legislative system. I found this internship through a Facebook post on the congresswoman's page and I applied on a whim not expecting to be offered the position. Fortunately, they extended the offer to me and I accepted the offer.
During my internship, I gave tours of the U.S. Capitol, researched and recommended legislation to cosponsor, and answered constituents questions regarding the congresswoman's policies. Before I began my internship, I did not expect a business education to help as much as it did. Having a background in business, I was able to understand business legislation and tax policy, and their possible implications for both small businesses and large corporations.
One of my favorite experiences from the internship was attending a lecture series where I was able to hear Secretary of Small Business Administration, Linda McMahon; Secretary of Labor, Alexander Acosta; and House Majority Whip, Steve Scalise speak. Working on Capitol Hill this summer was a great experience and I learned a lot about our nation's legislative system. I am so grateful that I was given this opportunity and I loved my time in DC!
