BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Brooke Stock (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) recorded a win an a save, and classmate Kayla Schinik (Watchung, N.J.) finished with three hits and drove in a run in each game to help Babson College sweep visiting Emerson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The Beavers (16-10, 11-3 NEWMAC) rallied to win the opener 4-2 and then built a five-run lead in game two before holding off the Lions (13-16, 4-9 NEWMAC), 6-4.
Game 1: Babson 4, Emerson 2
Juniors Jacqueline Paul (Burlington, Mass.) and Tori Roche (Andover, Mass.) both doubled and finished with two hits apiece while combining to drive in three runs for the Green and White. Schinik added an RBI single and Stock (8-5) went the distance allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out seven.
Senior Kallista Leonardos (El Granada, Calif.) was 2-for-3 with a solo home run to lead the Lions. First-year Myranda Borque (El Cajon, Calif.) tossed a complete game giving up four earned runs on nine hits and one walk to fall to 0-1 on the year with the loss.
Roche plated first-year Isabel Aguilar (Avon, Conn.) with an RBI single in the second, but Leonardos tied it with a solo blast to lead off the top of the fourth. First-year Morgan Mitchell (Riverton, Utah) doubled with one out in the fifth, moved to third on a ground out and then scored when classmate Mallory Shofi's (Ridgefield, Conn.) two-out bunt was mishandled to give Emerson a 2-1 advantage.
Babson responded in the bottom half of the frame as junior Annie Mitchell (Rehoboth, Mass.) and senior Josephine Mares (Houston, Texas) reached with back-to-back singles, and Paul drove them both home with a double to right two batters later as the hosts regained a 3-2 advantage. The Lions stranded a pair in the top of the sixth, Schinik drove in Roche with an insurance run in the bottom of the inning, and Stock retired the side in order in the seventh to secure the win.
Game 2: Babson 6, Emerson 4
Mares went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored, Schinik singled twice and drove in a run, and senior Alex Corrigan (Middletown, N.J.) chipped in with two RBI to help the Beavers finish off their second consecutive conference sweep. Junior Katie Gademsky (Hillsborough, N.J.) gave up three run on just three hits over 5.2 innings to win her fifth straight decision, and Stock came on in relief to get the final four outs and record her fourth save of the year.
Leonardos doubled and drove in a run, first-year Calli Pratt (Dighton, Mass.) had two hits, including a double, and classmate Lexi Semanchik (Flemington, N.J.) homered for the Lions. Sophomore Neely Eddleston (West Wareham, Mass.) started and dropped to 6-7 with the loss after giving up three runs on six hits in 4.0 innings.
Aguilar led off with a double and later scored on an error, and Schinik came through with a two-out RBI single to give the Green and White a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Corrigan plated a pair of runs with a bases-loaded single to right and later scored on a wild pitch as the Beavers extended their cushion to 5-0 an inning later.
Following an RBI double by Leonardos, Emerson cut its deficit to 5-3 on Semanchik's two-run blast with two outs in the sixth. Babson responded though, as Schinik led off the bottom half of the frame with a single and would come around to score on senior Ashley Tango's (Reading, Mass.) sacrifice fly to push the lead back to three.
