Women's Swimming and Diving Breaks Two Records on Opening Day of NEWMAC Championships


DAY 1 RESULTS

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Babson College women's swim team completed their first day of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by MIT on Friday, where the Beavers stood in eighth place overall. The three-day championship will feature 20 events. The Beavers broke program records in the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay on day one of the three-day competition, which will feature a total of 20 events. The teams will compete in seven events on Saturday and seven more on Sunday to finish out the championships.

The 200 free relay team composed of first-year Sara Martinek (Riverside, Ill.), first-year Brittany Bishop (Little Neck, N.Y.), first-year Mallory Mosk (San Clemente, Calif.), and sophomore Mia Filippini (Lake Forest, Ill.) finished with a time of 1:41.59 to break the Babson College record and place them fifth overall in the championships. A second relay team competed and finished 17th with a time of 1:49.29 and included first-year Chandra Kelley (Natick, Mass.), first-year Julia Frenette (Burlington, Vt.), senior captain Sabrina List (Red Bank, N.J.), and first-year Meaghan Rohde (Saint Paul, Minn.).

Competing in her first conference championship meet, Rohde also finished the 500 freestyle in 5:39.17 to place 26th overall. Teammate Katelynn Conlon (Stoneham, Mass.) also competed in the 500 freestyle and finished 52nd with a time of 6:10.55.

Filippini finished sixth overall in a pool of 65 swimmers in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.58. Bishop followed with a time for 25.67 for 18th place. Kelley, senior captain Shirley Wong (Malden, Mass.), and senior Claudia Gutierrez (Rego Park, N.Y.) also competed in the event and finished with times of 26.27; 28.37; and 30.48, respectively.

First-year Nakita Nadkarni (North Brunswick, N.J.) finished 19th overall in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:23.43. She was closely followed by List with a time of 2:23.59 and Frenette with a time of 2:26.96.

The night ended with another record-setting performance by the 400 medley relay team of Mosk, Nadkarni, Filippini and Martinek, which finished with a time of 4:08.25 to place sixth overall and surpass the previous Babson record by nearly four seconds. A second relay team consisting of sophomore Christina Stone (Haverhill, Mass.), Frenette, Kelley, and Bishop finished in a time of 4:33.54, placing them 18th overall.
