WORCESTER, Mass.—Led by a record-breaking performance from first-year Paris Ekman (Fargo, N.D.), the Babson College women's swimming & diving team earned 96 points on day two of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships on Friday.
Ekman broke Anne Gordon's 2004 record of 394.00 points in the preliminaries on Friday morning and then set a new record of 398.35 points at the 1-meter height in the finals. She came in eighth overall, earning 17 points for the Beavers, while also surpassing the NCAA qualification score of 395 and will compete at the NCAA Diving Regionals at RPI next weekend.
Junior Erica Riccardi (Los Angeles, Calif.) also had a strong performance in the 50-yard freestyle, qualifying 13th overall in the preliminaries with a time of 24.91, which was just less than a half second off a school record. Riccardi finished 14th in the finals with a time of 25.04 to earn nine points for the Green and White.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Riccardi and classmate Ascia Johnson (North Brunswick, N.J.), and first-years Madeline Dupre (Fiskdale, Mass.) and Mallory Ham (Norwalk, Conn.) came in ninth with a time of 1:44.56. Johnson and Riccardi also teamed up with senior Lily Yie (Longmont, Colo.) and junior Kendall Ford (Geneva, Ill.) to finish 10th in the 400-yard medley relay.
The 2014 NEWMAC Championship continues on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
