Swimming & Diving Posts Strong Individual Performances at WPI

Lucero Wins Three Events, Ekman Earns NCAA Regional Qualifying Scores in Both Diving Events

WORCESTER, Mass.—The Babson College swimming & diving teams combined for 15 top-three finishes and posted a pair of NCAA regional qualifying marks in diving in Friday night's meet at WPI. The Beavers fell to the host Engineers (200-93) and Brandeis (150-134) in the men's double dual meet, while the women's squad suffered losses to WPI (190-85), the Judges (176-85) and Smith (198-91).

The Green and White put together a number of strong individual performances, led by a trio of victories from first-year Jack Lucero (Huntington Beach, Calif.). He opened the meet by winning the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:13.86 and followed it up with another triumph in the 200 free. Lucero later capped the evening by touching the wall first with a time of 4:54.92 in the 500 free.

Classmate Alex Damiecki (Centerville, Mass.) put together a pair of strong results, finishing second in both the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley, while senior Anton Pronichenko (Palisades, Calif.) was the runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Kenneth Mun (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) came in third in the 100 breast, Pronichenko added a third-place showing in the 200 breast and junior Mitchell Posk (Boynton Beach, Fla.) finished third in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle.

Junior Alex Grant (St. Petersburg, Fla.) added a third-place result in the 200-yard butterfly to go along with a sixth-place finish in the 500 free, while first-year Michael Cerny (Windsor, Conn.) came in fifth in the 100 butterfly.

The Babson women were led by senior Paris Ekman (Fargo, N.D.), who recorded NCAA regional diving championship qualifying scores on both the 1- and 3-meter boards. She came in second in the 1-meter event with a score of 262.15 and posted a total of 271.30 to finish third in the 3-meter competition.

First-year Tirza Rentovich (Harrisburg, Pa.) continued her strong start with a time of 25.85 to finish second in the 50 free and followed it up by finishing third with a time of 56.92 in the 100 free. Sophomore Tessa Amoroso (Rowley, Mass.) came in fifth in both diving events, while senior Madeline Dupre (Fiskdale, Mass.) was sixth in both the 500 free and 1000 free.

Babson returns to action next Saturday when it travels to Norwich to face the host Cadets and Regis at 1 p.m.
