Women's Tennis Locks Up Third Seed With 7-2 Win Over MIT

BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Babson College women's tennis team finished up its regular season competition with a 7-2 victory over visiting MIT in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at the Farwell Courts on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, Babson (7-3 overall, 5-2 NEWMAC) will enter this weekend's conference tournament as the third seed and will have face sixth-seeded MIT (3-5 overall, 3-4 NEWMAC) in a rematch of today's contest in the NEWMAC Quarterfinals this Saturday, October 24, at 11 a.m. at MIT.

All three doubles matches were decided by just two points, with Babson taking two of the three for an early 2-1 lead. Senior captains Liz Sheerin (Melrose, Mass.) and Lorena Becerra (Key Biscayne, Fla.) teamed up for a close 9-7 win at number two, and sophomore Ashley Lake (Brockton, Mass.) joined forces with junior Monica Mercer (Woodinville, Wash.) on an 8-6 victory at three. MIT's first point came at number one doubles, where the tandem of sophomores Anastasia Vishnevetsky (Orange, Conn.) and Alex Hall (Hemet, Calif.) defeated Babson senior captain Jes Huang (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass.) in another tight match, 8-6.

Babson put the contest away with a dominating effort in singles play, as the Beavers took five of six matches for the overall 7-2 win. Stone earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at two, Becerra won 6-4, 6-1, at three, Mercer cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at four, first-year Mikaela Stamas (Northborough, Mass.) won, 6-0, 6-3, at five, and sophomore Gabriela Baez (Quito, Ecuador) posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory at six. The Engineers picked up their second point in the number one slot, where Vishnevetsky edged Huang, 6-3, 7-6 (5).
