Women's Tennis Snaps Skid With 8-1 Win Over Mount Holyoke
BABSON PARK, Mass. - Babson College snapped a two-match slide with a big 8-1 victory over visiting Mount Holyoke College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis contest at the Farwell Courts on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers improved to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Lyons dipped to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in the NEWMAC.
Babson jumped in front early by taking two of the three doubles contests, as the Beavers received matching 8-0 victories from the tandem of senior captain Jes Huang (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass.) at one and the team of sophomore Ashley Lake (Brockton, Mass.) and junior Monica Mercer (Woodinville, Wash.) at three. Mount Holyoke picked up its first point at number two, where junior Natalie Hsiang (Pittsford, N.Y.) and sophomore Sarah Moore (Plano, Texas) earned a hard-fought 8-6 win over the Babson pairing of senior captains Lorena Becerra (Key Biscayne, Fla.) and Liz Sheerin (Melrose, Mass.).
The Beavers put the contest away in singles competition, winning all six duels to clinch the 8-1 overall victory. Huang prevailed at one, 6-2, 6-1, Stone won at two, 7-6 (3), 6-3, Becerra triumphed at three, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, Mercer won at four 6-3, 6-4, first-year Mikaela Stamas (Northborough, Mass.) won a close battle at five, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5, and sophomore Gabriela Baez (Quito, Ecuador) cruised at six, 6-3, 6-3.
Both teams will hit the road for important NEWMAC matches this Tuesday at 4 p.m. Babson will head to Cambridge for a key contest with MIT, while Mount Holyoke heads to Springfield for a clash with the Pride.
