BRISTOL, R.I. – Babson College rolled off a 9-0 win over the Roger Williams University Women's Tennis team Thursday afternoon to begin the 2011-12 season.
The Beavers' tandem of Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn.) and Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) won, 8-2, at number one doubles over Tracy Klein (New City, N.Y.) and Samantha Curran (Barrington, R.I.), while Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass.) and Minte Tamoshunas (Pittsford, N.Y.) nabbed an 8-3 decision at two over Caitlin Osepchuk (Ocean Grove, N.J.) and Hillary Dutton (Cheshire, Conn.). Monica Mercer (Woodinville, Wash.) and Ashley Lake (Brockton, Mass.) closed out the doubles sweep at three with an 8-4 win over Amanda Wolfe (Mansfield, Mass.) and Libby Magner (Lakefield, Mass.)
In singles play, Curran nearly gave the Hawks their lone win on the day at two, falling 1-6 in the first set to Whitaker before coming back to take the second 6-4. Whitaker would take the third set superbreaker 10-6 to hold off Curran. At number one, Freeman would net a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Klein while Stone's 6-0, 6-3 win over Wolfe at four kept things rolling for the Beavers. Mikaela Stamas (Northborough, Mass.) won without dropping a game against Osepchuk at five, followed by Mercer closing out the match for Babson, winning 6-0, 6-1 against Hilton at six.
Roger Williams (0-1) gets another chance for its first win of the year Saturday against Rhode Island College at home at 1:00 p.m. Babson (1-0) hosts Nichols College and Colby-Sawyer College on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., respectively.
