BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Babson College women's tennis team extended its season-opening unbeaten streak to five with an 8-1 triumph over visiting Emerson College in a non-conference match at the Farwell Courts on Wednesday afternoon.
Babson (5-0) grabbed an early 3-0 lead with a sweep of doubles play. First-year Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) and sophomore Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn.) teamed up for an 8-5 win at number one, senior captain Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass.) and first-year Minte Tamoshunas (Pittsford, N.Y.) added an 8-2 victory at two, and junior Victoria Lorido (Miami, Fla.) and first-year Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla.) earned an 8-3 win at three.
The Beavers put the match away with five more wins in singles play – all of which came in straight sets. Stone made it 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 victory at number three and Ferraro clinched the overall match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at five. Tamoshunas added a 6-4, 6-0 win at four, Freeman won, 7-6 (1), 6-2 at one, and first-year Courtney Fischer (Greenwich, Conn.) prevailed, 6-2, 6-2, at six.
Emerson (0-2) notched its lone point of the afternoon at number two singles, where sophomore Savannah Mosser (Malibu, Calif.) coasted to a 6-1, 6-0 victory.
