CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The previously-undefeated Babson College women's tennis team fell to No. 22 MIT, 9-0, this afternoon in NEWMAC tennis action at MIT.
MIT (4-1, 4-0 NEWMAC) started off the afternoon with three close wins in doubles play, including Juana Becerra and Vynnie Kong handing the Beavers' Monica Mercer (Woodinville, Wash.) and Ashley Lake (Brockton, Mass.) their first loss of the season, 8-6, in No. 3 doubles. Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass.) and Minte Tamoshunas (Pittsford, N.Y.) dropped an 8-5 decision in the No.2 game, and Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn.) and Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) were beaten 8-4 in the No. 1 pairing.
In singles play for the Beavers, Stone at No. 3 and Mercer at No.6 lost close three-set matches. Stone won the first set over MIT's Anastasia Vishnevetsky 6-1, before dropping the final two sets 6-1, 6-4. Mercer ralled from down a set against Becerra, cruising to a 6-1 win to even things up, but fell 6-2 in the deciding set.
The Beavers (7-1, 3-1 NEWMAC), off to their best start since the 2003-04 season, and MIT will both be off from NEWMAC play this weekend, as they participate in the ITA Northeast Regional competition hosted by Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.
