BABSON PARK, Mass. – First-year Courtney Fischer (Greenwich, Conn.) recorded the decisive victory at number six singles to help the Babson College women's tennis team finish off a 5-4 victory over visiting Wheaton College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at the Farwell Courts on Thursday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Lyons dipped to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in NEWMAC play.
Sophomore Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif.) and first-year Alex Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz.) recorded an 8-1 win at number one doubles to get Wheaton off to a quick start, but Babson rallied with victories at the remaining doubles positions to move in front, 2-1. Senior Rebecca Stone (Dover, Mass.) and junior Minte Tamoshunas (Pittsford, N.Y.) won their match at number two, 8-2, and seniors Ashley Lake (Brockton, Mass.) and Monica Mercer (Woodinville, Wash.) earned an 8-3 victory at three.
Wheaton earned wins at the top three singles spots, with Cooke defeating rookie Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) at one, 6-1, 6-2, Marlowe topping sophomore Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn.) at two, 6-1, 6-2, and senior Allesandra DiOrio (Cumberland, R.I.) posting a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11) comeback win over Stone at three.
For Babson, Tamoshunas defeated Wheaton sophomore Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass.) at number four singles, 7-5, 7-5, and Mercer earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory over sophomore Sarah Crom (Bremen, Germany) at five. The decisive match came at number six, where Fischer bested Lyons' junior Jesse Boggis (Hopkinton, Mass.) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, to help the Beavers secure the 5-4 team win.
MATCH NOTE: Thursday's match was a continuation of Tuesday's match that was halted by rain during doubles play.
