BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Babson College women's tennis team celebrated its home opener by posting a 9-0 shutout over visiting Roger Williams University at the Farwell Courts on Saturday. The win was the second straight to start the season for the Beavers (2-0), while the Hawks (1-1) lost for the first time this fall.
Babson took control early thanks to a sweep of doubles play, highlighted by an 8-2 win by senior captain Victoria Lorido (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore Minte Tamoshunas (Pittsford, N.Y.) at number three. Junior Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn.) and sophomore Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) added an 8-3 victory at number one, and sophomore Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla.) teamed with first-year Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.) for an 8-5 triumph at two.
The hosts continued to roll in singles action, with Freeman and Tamoshunas leading the way with 6-0, 6-0 sweeps at numbers one and five, respectively. Paolino added a 6-0, 6-4 victory at three, Ferraro won 6-3, 6-2 at four, Lorido took her match 6-3, 6-2 at six, and Whitaker capped the sweep by holding on after a tight first set, 7-6 (2), 6-1, at number two.
Babson returns to action this Wednesday with a home match against Simmons at 3:30 p.m. Roger Williams is off until next Saturday, when the Hawks host Curry at 4 p.m.
