BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Babson College women's tennis team continued its perfect start to the 2012-13 season with another victory in its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday, as the Beavers shut out visiting Clark University, 9-0, at the Farwell Courts. Babson is now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in league play, while the Cougars see their record even at 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.
The closest match of the day came at number one doubles, where the Babson tandem of junior Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn.) and sophomore Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) took the final two games from the Clark duo of junior Gaby Suriano (San Salvador, El Salvador) and first-year Phoebe Hughes (Parkland, Fla.) to snap a 7-7 tie en route to a hard-fought 9-7 victory. The Cougars' team of first-year Kera Snyder (Portland, Maine) and senior Martha Ziemer (Arlington, Mass.) also put up a fight before succumbing to Babson senior captain Victoria Lorido (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore Minte Tamoshunas (Pittsford, N.Y.), 8-4, at number three, and Beavers' sophomore Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla.) and first-year Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.) finished off the doubles sweep with a convincing 8-1 triumph at number two.
Babson overpowered their opponents in singles competition, winning all six matches in straight sets while taking 72 out of the 82 total games. Ferraro and Lorido each won without dropping a single game, 6-0, 6-0 at numbers four and six, respectively, while Tamoshunas surrendered only a single game in her 6-1, 6-0 rout at number five. Completing the sweep were Freeman, who bested Suriano in a huge 6-0, 6-3 victory at number one, Whitaker, who prevailed 6-3, 6-0 at number two, and Paolino, who coasted 6-1, 6-2 at three.
The Beavers will look to continue their unbeaten play with another NEWMAC match next Saturday, when they host Smith College at 1 p.m. Meanwhile, Clark will look to get back to its winning ways with a 4 p.m. home match against non-conference foe Gordon College this Tuesday.
