BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Babson College extended its perfect start to the 2012-13 season with a nearly flawless victory over visiting Smith College on Saturday, as the Beavers swept the Pioneers, 9-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis contest at the Farwell Courts.
Now 5-0 overall and 2-0 in league play this fall, the Beavers opened with a quick 3-0 shutout of doubles play. Junior Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn.) and sophomore Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) continued their stellar play with an 8-2 win at number one, first-year Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.) and sophomore Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla.) added an 8-2 victory at two, and senior captain Victoria Lorido (Miami, Fla.) teamed up with sophomore Minte Tamoshunas (Pittsford, N.Y.) to complete the sweep with an 8-1 triumph at number three.
The Beavers' momentum carried into singles play, where the Green and White took all six matches in straight sets, including the bottom five in which Babson lost just six total games. The hosts received 6-0, 6-0 sweeps from Whitaker at two and Paolino at three, as well as a 6-2, 6-1 win from Ferraro at four, a 6-1, 6-1 rout from Tamoshunas at five, and a 6-1, 6-0 victory from Lorido at six. The most closely contested matchup of the afternoon came at number one, where Freeman outdueled sophomore Bayla Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.) of Smith (0-2, 0-2 NEWMAC) by a score of 6-4, 6-4.
Both teams will return to action next weekend, when they compete in the three-day ITA Championships hosted by MIT on September 28, 29, and 30.
