BOSTON, Mass.—After making a third straight league tournament semifinal appearance in 2012, the Babson College women's tennis team was picked to finish third when the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) released its first-ever preseason poll on Thursday.
Defending NEWMAC champion MIT was the unanimous choice to finish first, collecting all nine first-place votes, followed by last year's runner-up Wellesley in second place. Wheaton and Mount Holyoke came in fourth and fifth, respectively, conference newcomer Emerson was in sixth place, while Springfield, Clark and Smith rounded out the poll.
The Green and White returns four of its top six players from a season ago, including junior Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.), who led the team with 13 singles victories. Classmate Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla.) and sophomore Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.) each won 10 singles matches and combined to win 13 times in doubles play, tying for team-high honors.
The Beavers will get their season underway next Friday, August 30, when they travel Roger Williams University.
