BABSON PARK, Mass.—Led by two wins apiece from captains Sarah Whitaker (Dellwood, Minn.) and Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.), Babson College crusied past Springfield College, 9-0, in its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday afternoon at Farwell Courts.
With the victory, Babson moved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the league while Springfield dropped to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Freeman teamed with first-year Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.) for an 8-1 victory at number one doubles, Whitaker and junior Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla.) picked up an easy 8-1 win at second doubles, and junior Courtney Fischer (Greenwich, Conn.) and sophomore Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.) cruised to an 8-2 win at number three doubles to take a quick 3-0 lead.
The Beavers dominant play continued into the singles matches where they swept all six in straight sets. Freeman and Whitaker both won 6-0, 6-0 at first and third singles, respectively, while Weick, Paolino and Fischer only dropped one game apiece as the Green and White completed its second consecutive shutout to begin the 2013 season.
Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday afternoon as Babson hosts Simmons in a non-conference match at 3 p.m., while Springfield will travel to take on Nichols in a 4 p.m. start.
