Women's Tennis at NEWITT
Friday-Sunday, October 18-20
Hosted by Mount Holyoke College—South Hadley, Mass.
The Babson College women's tennis team will step away from its dual-match schedule this weekend to take part in the New England Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at Mount Holyoke College.
The tournament has two 32-team brackets and each matchup will feature a doubles match and two singles matches with the winner being decided in a best two-out-of-three format. The Round of 32 matches will take place on Friday afternoon, followed by the Round of 16 and quarterfinal matches on Saturday, with the semifinals and championship in each flight to be played on Sunday. Both brackets will have consolation matches on Saturday as well.
LAST SEASON'S RESULTS:
Current junior Alexis Ferraro and current sophomore Tori Paolino are coming off a run to the quarterfinals in 2012. The duo defeated Smith, 3-0, in the first round and followed it up with a 2-1 victory over Wheaton in the second round. Ferraro and Paolino picked up a doubles win over MIT, but dropped both singles matches in the quarterfinals, falling 2-1.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS:
Junior Alex Freeman and first-year Dina Weick will compete in the Gail Smith A Flight and will be facing a tough draw in the Round of 32 as they match up with Kara Shoemaker and Rebecca Curran, the top pairing from six-time defending champion Williams College, and overall number two seed. Ferraro and Paolino are seeded second in the Chris Davis B Flight, and will open up against Kathryn Denbach and Hannah Foe of Smith, while senior Sarah Whitaker and junior Courtney Fischer, who are also seeded in the Davis bracket, will take on Alana Peters and Ava Soleimany of MIT. Ferraro and Paolino will get their match underway at 3:00pm on Friday, while Babson's other two matches will both start at 1:00pm.
