BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) and first-years Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) and Kylie Kam (Honolulu, Hawaii) collected victories in both singles and doubles play as Babson College remained unbeaten by defeating visiting Smith College, 8-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Sunday afternoon at Farwell Courts.
With the win, Babson is now 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the NEWMAC, while Smith drops to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
The Beavers, who have not dropped a doubles match all season, lost just one game to open a 3-0 lead. Freeman and Akgul cruised to an 8-0 triumph at number one, senior Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla.) and junior Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.) won 8-0 at number two, and Kam and fellow first-year Jenny Quenard (St.-Legier, Switzerland) rolled to an 8-1 victory at number three.
Freeman and Akgul breezed to identical 6-0, 6-0 wins at number one and two singles, respectively, while Kam, who was making her singles debut, coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number five. First-year Claire Foster (Orange, Conn.) won 6-0, 6-1 at number three and sophomore Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.) matched her with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at number four.
The Pioneers' lone point of the match came from sophomore Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J.), who defeated Beavers' first-year Ashland Stansbury (Hingham, Mass.), 6-1, 6-3, at number six singles.
MATCH NOTES: The Pioneers lead the all-time series 15-12, but the Beavers have won the last eight matches and 12 of the last 15 going back to 2001…Babson has opened the season with five straight wins for the fifth time in the last seven years and is 2-0 in conference play for the eighth consecutive year.
