WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—The Babson College women's tennis team had a successful opening day at the ITA New England Championships at Williams College, as first-year Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) won a pair of singles matches and then paired up with senior Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) to reach the quarterfinals of the 32-team doubles draw.
Akgul won her first round singles match, 6-4, 6-1, over Corinne Alini of Bowdoin and then cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 second-round victory over Nicole McCann of Wesleyan to advance to Saturday's third round. Freeman breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Kelli Cheung of Smith in her first match but was tripped up in the second round by Aashli Budhiraja of Wesleyan, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. First-year Jenny Quenard (St.-Legier, Switzerland) also earned a spot in the 64-player singles draw and was defeated by Aandrita Deb of Tufts, 6-0, 6-2, in the opening round.
In doubles action, Freeman and Akgul won their first round match of Megan Adamo and Jackie Calla of Amherst, 8-3, and then beat Haley Cohen and Carley Cooke of Brandeis, 8-4, in the second round.
Akgul will take on Williams' Julia Cancio, who took out the tournament's top seed, in her third round singles match on Saturday at 9 a.m., while Quenard will face MIT's Krystal Lai in a consolation singles match at 10 a.m. Freeman and Akgul will then meet Rebecca Curran and Maria Pylypiv of Williams in the doubles quarterfinals at 12 p.m.
