WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—The Babson College women's tennis team wrapped up play at the ITA New England Championships at Williams College on Saturday afternoon with three more singles victories. First-year Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) won her third round match and reached the quarterfinals, while classmate Jenny Quenard (St.-Legier, Switzerland) won both her matches in the consolation bracket.
After winning a pair of singles matches on Friday, Akgul picked up where she left off with a 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Williams' Julia Cancio, who had knocked off the tournament's number one seed on Friday afternoon. Unfortunately her run would come to an end in the quarterfinals though, as she dropped a three-set thriller to the Ephs' Juli Raventos, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Quenard, who lost her opening round match on Friday morning, returned to action on Saturday, defeating a pair of strong opponents in the singles consolation bracket. She started the day with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Krystal Lai of MIT and then topped Elizabeth Erbafina of Bates, 6-1, 6-4 in her final match of the tournament.
Akgul and senior Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) won both of their doubles matches on Friday but were unable to advance out of the quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon, falling to the duo of Rebecca Curran and Maria Pylpiv of Williams, 8-3.
Babson (7-1, 3-1 NEWMAC) returns to action with the first of three matches in four days on Wednesday when it hosts Emerson College at 5 p.m.
