NORTON, Mass.—Four different players earned points in both singles and doubles play as visiting Babson College cruised past Wheaton College, 8-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Tuesday afternoon at the Clark Tennis Courts.
With the victory, Babson is now 9-2 overall and 5-2 in conference play, while Wheaton, which has dropped three straight matches, falls to 4-5 overall and 4-3 in the NEWMAC.
The Beavers dropped just five total games in doubles to grab a quick 3-0 lead. Senior Alex Freeman (Medfield, Mass.) and first-year Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) won 8-1 at number one, classmates Kylie Kam (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Jenny Quenard (St.-Legier, Switzerland) rolled to an 8-2 victory at number two, and senior Alexis Ferraro (Coral Gables, Fla.) and junior Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.) had little trouble in an 8-2 win at number three.
Akgul stayed unbeaten at number two singles with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Lyons' sophomore Amanda Brazell (Las Vegas, Nev.), while Paolino breezed to a 6-1, 6-0 win at number four. Quenard was victorious for the eighth time in 11 matches, winning 6-3, 6-0, at number three, and Ferraro outlasted senior Kathryn Burleson (Osterville, Mass.), 7-5, 1-6, 10-4, at number five. First-year Claire Foster (Orange, Conn.) collected Babson's final point with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at number six.
Wheaton's lone win came at first singles as senior Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz.) edged Freeman, 6-4, 6-1.
Babson returns to action on Friday when it travels to Bates College at 3:30 p.m., while Wheaton travels to Clark University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
