NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—The Babson College women's tennis team continued to roll through its early-season schedule, posting a 9-0 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Sunday afternoon at the Smith Tennis Facility.
With the victory, Babson is now 6-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while Smith drops to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.
The Beavers had little trouble in doubles, dropping just a total of four games to take a 3-0 lead. Sophomore Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) and first-year Eleni Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) won 8-2 at number one, while the pairings of senior Tori Paolino (East Orleans, Mass.) and junior Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.) at number two and sophomore Kylie Kam (Honolulu, Hawaii) and first-year Chloe Brandt (Denver, Colo.) at number three were both 8-1 winners.
Akgul collected a 6-1, 6-0 victory at first singles, Gianelos recorded a 6-2, 6-0 triumph at number two and Weick stayed unbeaten on the year with a 6-2, 6-1 at number three. Sophomore Claire Foster (Orange, Conn.) was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at number four, while Kam and Brandt both cruised to 6-0, 6-2 victories at fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
Babson is now idle until it hosts MIT on September 22 at 3:30 p.m., while Smith travels to Wheaton next Saturday at 1 p.m.
• Babson is now 13-15 against Smith dating back to 1989 and has won nine consecutive matches against the Pioneers since 2007.
• Paolino picked up her 50th career doubles win on Sunday and is now seventh on the program's all-time list.
• The Beavers are off to a 3-0 start in NEWMAC play for the third time in the last five years.
• Babson has now won eight consecutive matches against conference foes going back to last season.
