MIDDLEBURY, Vt.—The Babson College women's tennis team had a pair of players win first-round singles matches, while sophomores Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) and Jenny Quenard (St.-Legier, Switzerland) advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw on the opening day of the ITA New England Championships on Friday.
Seeded seventh in the 32-team doubles draw, Akgul and Quenard rolled to an 8-3 victory over Caroline DiNicola-Fawley and Izzy Gorham of Wheaton College in the first round, and then topped the host Panthers duo of Lily Bondy and Lauren Amos, 8-2, in the Round of 16. Beavers' first-years Chloe Brandt (Denver, Colo.) and Eleni Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) also won their opening match over Linda Shin and Korina Neveaux of Williams College, 8-4, before suffering an 8-1 second-round loss to Tiffany Cheng and Joulia Likhainsaka of Bowdoin College.
In singles play, Akgul and Gianelos were both victorious in their first round matches before falling in the Round of 32. Akgul defeated Helen Klass-Warch of Wesleyan University, 7-5, 6-2, before losing to Mina Karamercan of Tufts University, while Gianelos downed Gabriella Vendetti of Colby, 6-2, 6-2, before being upended by Likhanisaka in the second round. Quenard also competed in the 64-player singles bracket, dropping her opening match 6-3, 6-2 to Jackie Calla of Amherst College.
The Green and White will compete in the consolation singles bracket on Saturday morning before Akgul and Quenard face off with the tournament's top-seeded doubles team in a quarterfinal matchup in the afternoon.
