Women's Tennis at the NEWITT Tournament
Friday-Sunday, October 16-18
Hosted by Smith College and Hampshire College

The Babson College women's tennis team will take a break from dual-match play to compete at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) this weekend hosted by Smith College. Play begins at 1 p.m. on Friday with first and second round matches, and will continue starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. on Sunday.

In the past the tournament has featured four 16-team brackets with each matchup featuring a best-of-three format involving two singles and one doubles match. The 2015 NEWITT Tournament will have one 64-team bracket with doubles matches only. Each match will be played to eight points, with winning teams advancing in the East bracket and losing teams moving to the West (consolation) bracket after the first round.

Babson enjoyed great success at last year's tournament as junior Dina Weick and sophomore Claire Foster won the Chris Davis C flight championship, while Courtney Fischer '15 and Ashland Stansbury finished as the runner-up in the D flight. Sophomore Yagmur Akgul and Alex Freeman '15 reached the semifinals of the Gail Smith A draw, and senior Tori Paolino and Alexis Ferraro '15 made the quarterfinals of the B flight for the third consecutive year.

Babson (10-1) concluded NEWMAC regular-season play on Wednesday with a 9-0 rout of Emerson and will have nine players taking part in the NEWITT Tournament this weekend. The Beavers will feature four teams, and first-year Alexandra Blizard will team up with first-year Charlotte Scott of Williams. Akgul, who is 11-1 this season in doubles, and sophomore Jenny Quenard are seeded second in the tournament have received a bye into the round of 32. First-years Eleni Gianelos and Chloe Brandt, who are both 10-2 overall and 4-2 playing together will team up, as will Paolino and Weick, who are 8-3 as partners this season. Foster and fellow sophomore Kylie Kam are also paired together for the Beavers and are 2-0 as a team this fall.
