Women's Tennis Competes at ITA New England Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Three members of the Babson College women's tennis team competed in the ITA New England Championships on Friday at MIT. Junior Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) and first-year Tatiana Ramirez (Miami, Fla.) both competed in the 64-player singles draw, while Akgul and senior Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.) took part in the 32-team doubles bracket.

Ramirez was the only player to pick up a victory for the Beavers on Friday as she recorded a 6-1, 6-0 victory over sophomore Samantha Peikes (West Hartford, Conn.) of Smith in a first-round singles match. Ramirez saw her run come to an end with a 6-2, 6-2 loss to third-seeded senior Joulia Likhanskaia (Winter Park, Fla.) of Bowdoin in the second round.

Akgul, who had won each of her first seven singles matches of the year entering the tournament, suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to fifth-seeded senior Alex Fields (Coral Gables, Fla.) of Middlebury in first-round singles play. Akgul and Weick later dropped an 8-2 decision to the top-seeded duo of junior Juli Raventos (San Jose, Costa Rica) and senior Linda Shin (Johns Creek, Ga.) of Williams in their opening-round doubles match.

The Green and White returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Emerson at 3:30 p.m.
