Women's Tennis Falls to Wellesley, 7-2

WELLESLEY, Mass.—Junior Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) was victorious in both singles and doubles, but it wasn't enough as Babson College suffered a 7-2 loss to Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse.

With the loss, Babson slips to 7-2 overall and 4-2 in conference play, while Wellesley improves to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the NEWMAC.

Akgul and senior Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.) got the Beavers off to an early lead with an 8-4 triumph at number one doubles. The Blue rallied to win the final two matches though, as senior Andjela Stojkovic (Victoria, British Columbia) and first-year Sarah Yan (Holmdel, N.J.) defeated Babson sophomores Chloe Brandt (Denver, Colo.) and Eleni Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) 8-6 at number two, while sophomore Rosanne Hu (Sugar Land, Texas) and first-year Selina Peng (Taichung, Tawain) downed junior Claire Foster and first-year Tatiana Ramirez (Miami, Fla) 9-7 at number three.

Akgul edged senior Carina Chen (Hong Kong), 6-4, 6-3, for the Beavers' lone point in singles action. Brandt split the first two sets at number four before falling 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-7), while Foster rallied from a set down before suffering a 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (10-6) loss at number five. Wellesley won in straight sets at second, third and sixth singles.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. as Babson travels to Wheaton, while Wellesley hosts Emerson.

•    Saturday's loss snapped the Beavers' three-match winning streak against Wellesley.
•    Akgul improved to 8-0 this season in both dual-match singles and doubles play with a pair of victories.
•    Saturday's loss was just the fourth in 16 matches in the month of October going back to 2014 for Babson.
