Women's Tennis Opens With Three First Round Wins at NEWITT

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—The Babson College women's tennis team saw three of its five pairings win first round matches on day one of the New England Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) at Smith and Mount Holyoke on Friday afternoon.

Junior Claire Foster (Orange, Conn.) and first-year Tatiana Ramirez (Miami, Fla.) were one the Beavers' two pairings to advance to the second round in the B draw. Despite falling in doubles 8-6, Ramirez was a 6-1, 6-4 winner in singles, while Foster posted a 6-3, 7-5 result to help the duo edge Maddie Lupone and Jamie Pine of Colby.

Sophomore Eleni Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) made her season debut in singles with a 7-5, 6-1 victory as she and first-year Emily Roeper (Belle Mead, N.J.) topped Alanna Judd and Megan Nathanson of Nichols, 3-0. Roeper remained unbeaten in singles with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph and the duo won 8-6 in doubles to advance to the second round of the B bracket.

Sophomore Alexandra Blizard (Dover, Mass.) and first-year Danielle Grant (Yonkers, N.Y.) advanced by default over Cara Freadman and Rebecca Link of Springfield in the C bracket, while both of Babson's A draw pairings lost on day one. Senior Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.) and junior Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) fell 2-1 to Sabrina Ross Neergaard and Olivia Leavitt of Brandeis. Junior Kylie Kam (Honolulu, Hawaii) and sophomore Chloe Brandt (Denver, Colo.) suffered a 3-0 loss to Camille Smukler and Jen Chen of Amherst.

All five of the Beavers' pairings will return to action on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
