Akgul and Weick Advance to A Draw Consolation Final
NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—The Babson College women's tennis team continued play at the New England Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) on Saturday, highlighted by a pair of victories by senior Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.) and junior Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey).
Weick and Akgul bounced back from a first-round loss on Friday to advance to the consolation final in the A draw with back-to-back wins on Saturday. Akgul won both her singles matches and the duo posted a pair of victories in doubles on its way to recording 2-1 wins over pairings from both Colby and Colby-Sawyer.
Junior Claire Foster (Orange, Conn.) and first-year Tatiana Ramirez (Miami, Fla.) rallied after a doubles loss to win both singles matches in its quarterfinal contest against Colby-Sawyer in the B draw. Foster posted a 6-2, 6-1 result, while Ramirez breezed to a 6-4, 6-0 victory. The duo saw their tournament run come to an end with a 3-0 loss to Amherst in the semifinals.
Junior Kylie Kam (Honolulu, Hawaii) and sophomore Chloe Brandt (Denver, Colo.) were 8-6 winners in doubles, but dropped both singles matches in a 2-1 loss to Wheaton in their second-round A bracket match. Sophomore Eleni Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) and first-year Emily Roeper (Belle Mead, N.J.) suffered a 3-0 loss to MIT in their B draw second round match, while sophomore Alexandra Blizard (Dover, Mass.) and first-year Danielle Grant (Yonkers, N.Y.) dropped a 2-1 decision to Smith in the C bracket.
Akgul and Weick will play for the A draw consolation title on Sunday at 9 a.m.
