Women's Tennis Falls to Wellesley in NEWMAC Semifinals, 5-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—The second-seeded Wellesley College women's tennis team built a 2-1 lead after doubles and won three of the first four singles matches on its way to defeating third-seeded Babson College, 5-2, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament semifinal match on Saturday afternoon.

Babson, which was seeking its third straight conference final appearance, ends the fall at 10-3, while Wellesley improves to 10-1.

Senior Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.) and junior Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) staked the Beavers to a 1-0 lead with an 8-5 win at number one doubles. The Green and White suffered losses in the final two matches though, as sophomores Chloe Brandt (Denver, Colo.) and Eleni Gianelos (West Chester, Pa.) fell 8-5 at number two, while juniors Claire Foster (Orange, Conn.) and Kylie Kam (Honolulu, Hawaii) dropped an 8-4 decision at number three.

Akgul collected Babson's second point with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at first singles, but the Blue won the next three completed matches to close out the win. Gianelos was defeated 6-4, 6-2 at number two, first-year Tatiana Ramirez (Miami, Fla.) suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss at number three and Weick was downed 6-1, 6-3 at number four.

•    The Beavers and Wellesley met in the NEWMAC Tournament semifinals for the third straight year on Saturday. Babson had defeated the Blue in each of the last two years.
•    The Beavers are 2-7 all-time in the conference playoffs against Wellesley.
•    Babson trailed after doubles in each of its three losses this fall.
•    Weick ends the fall with a career-high 15 doubles wins, while Akgul is just three wins away from 100 for her career.
