Three-Time All-Conference Honoree Becomes First NEWMAC Athlete of the Year in Program History
BOSTON—Babson College had a pair of players named to the all-conference women's tennis teams on Tuesday, highlighted by junior Yagmur Akgul's (Istanbul, Turkey) selection as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Athlete of the Year.
An all-conference first-team choice at number one singles, Akgul and senior Dina Weick (Woodbridge, Conn.) were named to the league's first team at number one doubles. The honor was the first in doubles for Weick, who received All-NEWMAC singles accolades in 2015.
Just the program's second three-time all-league selection in both singles and doubles, Akgul is the first Babson player in school history to garner NEWMAC Athlete of the Year accolades. She went 13-2 overall this fall, which includes a perfect 10-0 mark in dual matches at first singles and a 7-0 record in conference matches. Akgul owns a 47-7 career singles record and has won 24 of her 26 matches versus league foes.
The Beavers' top doubles duo, Weick and Akgul won all six of its NEWMAC matches at number one and finished the fall at 11-2 overall. The duo went 8-0 in dual matches, including a pair of wins in last week's conference tournament. Weick has already set a new career high for doubles victories as she closed the fall season out with 15 in 17 matches.
In addition to her all-conference awards, Akgul was also named to the newly formed All-NEWMAC Sportsmanship team along with a player from each institution.
Babson wrapped up the fall at 10-3 and will return to action in March.
