WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—Babson College women's tennis senior Yagmur Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey) and first-year Alexa Tutecky (North York, Ontario) opened play at the 2017 ITA New England Championships with strong results in both singles and doubles on Friday.
Akgul and Tutecky were the only doubles pairing to advance to the quarterfinals from outside the NESCAC after cruising to a pair of victories on Friday. The duo topped Maddie Lupone and Callie Nesbitt of Colby, 8-0, in the first round, and then eased past fifth-seeded Diana Dehterevich and Sabrina Ross Neergard of Brandeis, 8-2, in the Round of 16. Akgul and Tutecky will take on Anya Ivenitsky and Avery Wagman of Amherst in a quarterfinal match on Saturday.
One of just 16 seeded competitors in the 64-player singles bracket, Tutecky won her first two matches to advance to Saturday's third round. She dispatched Ines de Bracamonte of Wheaton, 6-0, 6-4, in her opening match and then edged Katy Hughes in three sets (6-0, 4-6, 6-3) to reach the final 16, where she will face three-time NCAA Division III singles champion Eudice Chong of Wesleyan on Saturday.
Akgul won her first-round match against Haley Cohen of Brandeis, 6-3, 6-1, before falling to Mia Gancayco of Williams, 6-1, 6-0, in the second round.
Saturday's matches get underway at 9 a.m. at Williams.
