NORTHAMPTON, Mass.—The Babson College women's tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) on Saturday afternoon.
The pairing of junior Carolina Merz (Santa Tecla, El Salvador) and first-year Ipek Akgul (Istanbul, Turkey), who suffered a first round loss on Friday, dropped two of three points in their consolation match against Casey Cummings and Nicole Frankel of Tufts on Saturday morning. Merz picked up the Beavers' lone victory with a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10) decision in singles after her and Ipek fell in doubles, 8-7 (7-4).
Both Babson pairings won first round matches on Friday to advance to Saturday's quarterfinals, where senior Emily Roeper (Belle Mead, N.J.) and first-year Laura De La Espriella (Sunrise, Fla.) to a 3-0 triumph over Rachel Ahlmeyer and Fulgieri of Springfield. Following an 8-1 win in doubles, De La Espriella posted a 6-0, 6-2 result in singles, while Roeper breezed to a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The duo saw their run end in the semifinals with a 2-1 loss to Ashley Walker and Krista Jiranek of Trinity. De La Espriella garnered the Beavers' point taking a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) decision in singles.
Junior Ally Kaden (Brielle, N.J.) and sophomore Mary Kille (Simsbury, Conn.) suffered a 2-1 loss in their quarterfinal match against Nichols. They were beaten 8-1 in doubles before splitting the singles matches. Kille was a 7-5, 6-3 winner, while Kaden dropped a 6-1, 6-3 decision.
Babson will begin the spring portion of its schedule in February.
