Mackiewicz Leads Women's Volleyball Past Simmons in Three Sets

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Lorraine Mackiewicz (Edison, N.J.) hit .789 and led all players with 16 kills, eight digs and seven blocks to lift Babson College to a three-set sweep of visiting Simmons College, 25-18, 25-17, 25-23, in non-conference women's volleyball action on Thursday night at Staake Gymnasium.

With its second win in as many nights, Babson is now 16-11 on the year, while Simmons drops to 9-11 overall.

First-year Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hill, Calif.) dished out a match-high 29 assists for the Beavers, while senior Jenny Karnes (Houston, Texas) finished with six kills and six digs. Sophomore Gizem Yilmaz (Istanbul, Turkey) added five kills and four blocks and first-year Kristin Carosotto (East Greenwich, R.I.) chipped in with two kills and five blocks in the win.

First-year Morgan Weeg (Goodyear, Ariz.) recorded 10 kills and three blocks, while senior Abby Hart (Westfield, Mass.) added eight kills and two blocks to lead the Sharks. First-year Carly Wanner-Hyde (Newington, Conn.) finished with 19 assists and senior Alex Itasaka (Bradford, Mass.) and first-year Riana Pozgai (Medway, Mass.) each contributed seven digs.

The Green and White got four kills from Mackiewicz and recorded five blocks while taking advantage of six Simmons service errors for an easy seven-point win in the opening set. With game two knotted at 16-16, Babson used four kills by Mackiewicz and another from senior Kristen Haislip (Waterford, Va.) as part of a closing 9-1 run for a two-set lead.

The Beavers jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the third set, but were never able to pull away from the Sharks, who cut their deficit to a single point on five occasions. Babson matched its biggest lead of the stanza at 23-19 on a kill by Mackiewicz and then used a Yilmaz kill and a service error by Simmons to end the match.

The Green and White hit .218 as a team and finished with 10 total blocks, marking the third time in the last five matches it has reached double digits.

Babson wraps up the regular season with matches against Roger Williams at 2 p.m. and the host Judges at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Brandeis. Simmons travels to Suffolk for a tri-match on Saturday starting at 11 a.m.

•    The Beavers are 17-6 all-time against Simmons and have won seven consecutive matches in the series going back to 1999.
•    In three career matches against the Sharks, Mackiewicz has recorded 31 kills while hitting at a .620 clip.
•    Babson concludes the regular season with a 7-0 record at home and has won 12 consecutive matches at Staake Gymnasium.
•    Thursday's match marked the final regular season home contest for Mackiewicz, Karnes, Haislip and senior captain Alana Atchison (Pembroke, Mass.). The Beavers' four seniors have helped the program capture back-to-back NEWMAC championships while posting an 89-41 record since 2013.
